Welcome to the first speaker in the Knowledge Mobilization for Settlement Series. Nick is a longtime friend of the Immigrant and Refugee-serving sector. You probably know him. And if you don’t, you should. His most recent projects should be of immediate interest to you and your newcomers clients. In this conversation he shared what he's working on and you’ll want him to become your organization’s best friend.

Presented at the P2P 2021 conference, this panel looked at Immigrants who arrived or settled in Canada during COVID-19 and their unique path compared to their predecessors. The session provided insights on the latest immigration and immigrant employment trends, as well as examples of how the settlement sector has adapted to support the COVID cohort. The composition of immigration classes has changed. In addition, Newcomers faced significant employment challenges as the pandemic had a disproportionate impact on certain Immigrant-intensive sectors, such as accommodation and food services. Settlement service providers had to pivot and leverage new virtual and hybrid models to support this new cohort.

We can and should know whose land we live, work, and play on. And we should acknowledge that when we meet and gather together. But, if you're like me, you may be finding land acknowledgements have become a bit of performance without substance. I wondered, what responsibility do we (our sector) and newcomers have when it comes to truth and reconciliation with Indigenous peoples?

A few months ago I shared resources to help answer the question what will your hybrid workplace actually look like? It's still a big question. Sector leaders have been bringing you together to help think it through. This post includes a few useful webinar recordings that might be helpful for you.

We have lost one of the good ones. Francisco was a presence in our sector. I feel lucky to have known and learned from him.

Ongoing professional development, training, and learning is essential in our sector. There isn't enough consistent, ongoing, funded, and baseline training that occurs. For many, it's a task that individual workers must take on and maintain. That learning can take place formally, through courses, webinars, workshops, conferences, etc. It can also take place informally (or formally) in Communities of Practice. Here are some learning spaces that are specific to the sector, where both formal and informal learning takes place.
